The rule that surprises peopleYou must already hold a 3-day race ticket — no race ticket, no walk

If you're deciding right now

It's mid-afternoon in Sepang and the gates are open (opened 14:30 MYT). Here's the short version: if you hold a valid pit-lane walk pass and a 3-day race ticket, head to the circuit now and follow the pit-lane-walk signage — allow extra time for ticket checks and security screening. The walk itself runs from 15:15 and the last entry is 16:30 sharp, so aim to be through the gates well before 16:00.

If you don't have a walk pass, the honest position has shifted: official passes appear sold out — an active resale market has sprung up on X, with buyers and sellers posting WTS/WTB at the RM20 face price. Peer-to-peer at the gate is unverified and this close to entry it carries real scam risk. Don't drive to Sepang counting on a gate sale we can't verify. The walk is underway as of this writing — gates 14:30, passes reading through ~17:10 — and the firsthand reports are already coming in. The full 'wish I'd known' debrief is below; if you're reading this for Friday's lessons, skip straight there.

Wish I'd known: what today's walk was actually like

Firsthand reports from Thursday's walk, via Threads and Instagram posts from attendees — unverified but consistent, and the best preview Friday's crowds will get.

Arrive an hour early or queue an hour. Lines formed along the road and grass well before the 14:30 opening — one widely-shared post joked Malaysians were 'proving they can be punctual by arriving an hour before gates open,' with a commenter adding: 'We are only punctual towards things that brings excitement.' Gates stayed shut until 14:30 sharp, pass or no pass — crowds waited outside in the heat, some sitting in their cars. Entry throughput was slow: one attendee was still outside at 15:30, fifteen minutes after the walk began, and the queue stalled at times. The crowd size itself surprised people — 'already queuing like this for the pit walk; imagine Sunday.'

The good stuff delivered. The garages were genuinely open — McLaren's bays (Piastri #81 in Pit 6, Norris #4 in Pit 4) with tool chests, parts and crew in kit; Ferrari's bays with Hamilton #44 and Leclerc #16 names and portraits above the doors, tire stacks, red cars visible inside. And the drivers-sometimes-show-up line proved out: Lewis Hamilton rode a small e-scooter along the pit walkway, waving at fans. Beloved photo spots: alone on the empty starting grid with arms raised, the TAG Heuer arch, the painted SEPANG grid, the driver portraits, the Audi/Revolut pit wall. Wholesome standout: one fan's grandmother — black hijab, teal outfit — made it onto the pit straight with two grandkids before he did. Comments: 'nenek baddie.'

The bad: heat, then a 5-minute shower. Extreme heat in the queues, then a sudden tropical downpour mid-walk that lasted about five minutes and stopped. There was nothing to do while waiting — no shade, no stalls in the holding area. The umbrella wasn't just allowed, it was the queue survival tool in nearly every photo.

Practical tips from the ground: navigate to 'Petronas SIC' on Google Maps, then follow the signboards. Parking — the SIC main lot was filling; P2/P3 still had spaces, close to the entrance. You can't wander the gate area before opening, pass or not. International fans were coordinating shared Grabs from KLIA in the comments — worth doing if you're landing with strangers heading the same way.

For Friday's crowds, the warnings are: (1) entry is slow — the 8:30 AM opening will have far bigger crowds than Thursday; (2) no shade in holding queues — umbrella non-negotiable; (3) pack the poncho even on a sunny morning — that 5-minute downpour came out of nowhere; (4) resale ran hot — sellers asked RM50, two-and-a-half times the RM20 face price, so the resale warnings stand.

What the walk actually is

For about an hour on Thursday afternoon, the pit lane opens to pass-holders. You walk the length of it — past the team garages, the pit boxes, the equipment, the crews doing their final prep before Friday practice. It's the closest most fans will ever get to the working side of a Formula 1 weekend, and with the cars silent and the garages open, it's the best photo hour of the week.

Thursday is also the only day the track opens before Friday. Gates for the race weekend proper open at 08:30 on Friday (official organizer release). If you're in town early, this is the thing to do.

What it is not

Set expectations honestly. This is a walk along the pit lane — it is not a garage tour. You don't go inside team garages, you don't wander the paddock, and nobody promises driver appearances or autograph sessions. Drivers sometimes show up; usually they don't. Come for the access, the photos, and the atmosphere — and anything extra is a bonus.

The usual circuit rules apply: no food and drink brought in, no glass bottles, no water bottles, no professional camera equipment. Phones are fine.

The haze note

You'll be standing on an open pit straight for up to an hour, so the air matters. Yesterday Kuala Lumpur ranked #1 for worst air pollution in the world on IQAir (AQI 165), with Sepang at 154 — unhealthy. The circuit is monitoring air quality with NADMA and MetMalaysia, cloud seeding was carried out around Sepang today and is planned for tomorrow, and the SIC chief executive has confirmed there is an API threshold that could cancel or postpone running — but as of now, everything is going ahead.

Practical advice: bring a mask — an N95/KN95 beats a surgical mask in haze — plus water and something for the sun. If you have asthma, or you're bringing kids or elderly family members, think honestly about an hour standing in it. Nobody at the gate will tell you to stay home; that's your call.

Getting there today

Thursday isn't a race day, so the full race-weekend transport operation (free Rapid KL shuttles, 8 police checkpoints) isn't running yet — but give yourself margin anyway. Grab and the KLIA transit options still work; see getting there for the full rundown. Parking passes are a race-weekend thing, so Thursday access is simpler — but follow whatever instructions came with your walk pass.

Quick answers

Do I need a separate ticket for the pit-lane walk?
Yes. The walk pass is RM20 (about US$5) on top of your race ticket — and the critical part: you must already hold a valid 3-day race ticket to take part. The walk pass alone gets you nothing.

Can I go with a 1-day ticket?
No. The eligibility rule is a 3-day race ticket, and this event only sold three-day passes anyway — there are no single-day tickets for the Sepang weekend.

What time should I arrive?
Gates open 14:30, the walk begins 15:15, last entry is 16:30 (all MYT). Be through the gates by 15:00 at the latest — security screening takes time and the window is short.

Are walk passes still available?
Official passes appear sold out as of Thursday afternoon. An active resale market has sprung up on X — buyers and sellers posting at the RM20 face price — but peer-to-peer at the gate is unverified and carries real scam risk this close to entry. There is no confirmed gate-sale option. If someone offers you a pass, treat it like any race-week resale: see the ticket, verify the seller, never pay in advance.

Is the walk affected by the haze?
As of Thursday afternoon it's going ahead. SIC is monitoring air quality with NADMA and MetMalaysia, ran cloud seeding around the circuit today, and says an API cancellation threshold exists — but nothing has been cancelled. Bring a mask either way.

Can I take photos?
Yes — phones and small cameras are fine and this is the best photo hour of the week. Professional camera equipment is on the circuit's prohibited list.

Times and rules as published by the organisers and reported by GPDestinations and tickets.gp this week — operational details can change on the day, so follow circuit signage and staff instructions.
