Where to sit at Sepang

Sepang is a big, wide circuit with genuinely different experiences depending on where you sit — the start-finish straight and the final hairpin might as well be different races. Here's the honest breakdown, gathered from circuit guides, veteran racegoers, and the official ticket categories.

  • First F1 race ever → Main Grandstand. Start, finish, pit lane, podium — everything that makes an F1 weekend an F1 weekend happens in front of you.
  • Here for the racing → K1. Turns 1–2 is Sepang's classic overtaking zone; the whole field arrives together on lap one.
  • Best value with a real seat → F. Turns 7–8 plus sightlines down toward the back straight and the final hairpin — several corners from one seat.
  • Cheapest full weekend → B or C hillstand. Grass banks, picnic atmosphere, bring a mat.
  • Absolute cheapest → G hillstand. The RM200 Madani stand (Malaysian citizens with MyKad only), overlooking Turns 4–6.

The grandstands

Main Grandstand — start/finish straight

Opposite the pit lane and team garages, with the start, the finish, and the podium directly ahead. Big screen opposite the stand so you can follow the whole race. Covered seating. K1 — Turns 1 & 2

The heavy-braking zone at the end of the main straight, where the field funnels into the opening corners — the most dramatic part of lap one and a prime overtaking spot all race. Covered, with a screen visible. Also reported sold out.

F — Turns 7 & 8

The connoisseur's pick: fast, flowing corners in front of you and views stretching toward the back straight and the final hairpin (Turn 15), so you see action in several parts of the lap. The Hong Kong and Taiwanese fan guides rate this the best-value seated ticket.

The hillstands

Grass banks, open air, no reserved seat — claim a spot early, especially on Sunday. Bring something to sit on and a poncho; there is no shelter.

  • B hillstand — the closing section, around Turns 12–14.
  • C hillstand — Turns 9–11 with views of the back straight.

Veterans' advice The grandstands have TV screens, but they're small and not every seat gets a clean view — a pair of binoculars earns its place in your bag. Trackside commentary runs in English and Malay on FM radio, which matters most on the hillstands, where screens aren't guaranteed. And buy middle rows if you can: the front rows of the covered stands still catch the sun and the rain.

Bringing kids
