We Were All Over the Place (in a Short Amount of Time)
By Stefani & Will Tygart · September 28, 2026
Stefani & Will — for RaceSepang
Malaysia doesn’t wait for you to settle. In a stretch of days that still feels shorter than it was — before Sepang became the whole point — we hopped bases the way other people hop cafés: downtown Kuala Lumpur for nights, Genting Highlands when we needed the air to change, and later Cyberjaya when race week meant Grab math mattered more than skyline views.
This isn’t a polished itinerary. It’s what it felt like to be all over the place on purpose.
Downtown KL — noise, food, late returns
We based in the city when the trip was still about being in Malaysia, not making a circuit call time. Towers, hawker heat, Grab drivers who knew shortcuts we didn’t. Sleep was negotiable; AC was not. If you’re here for race week and you romanticize “central,” budget the traffic tax: beautiful nights, longer mornings to the track.
What mattered: walking distance to food, a room that cooled down fast, and not pretending the city is close to Sepang just because the map looks small.
Genting Highlands — cool air, cable car, reset day
When the lowland humidity won, we went up. Genting is the pressure-release valve — thinner air, tourist bustle, that cable-car float between jungle and casino lights. We weren’t there to “do” every attraction. We were there to remember what cool felt like, then drop back down.
What mattered: one full reset day beats three half-hearted ones. Pack a layer; the temperature swing is the point.
Cyberjaya — tech quiet, circuit corridor
Will stayed in Cyberjaya for a stretch when the race was the reason. Tech-park energy: planned roads, quieter nights than KL, Grab in to the circuit; session traffic decides how long. If you like that campus feel — servers and palm trees, not rooftop bars — it’s a sane race-week base.
What mattered: sleep and AC first, Grab reliability second, skyline third. Hotel vs Airbnb came down to those three, not the brand on the door.
Hotel vs Airbnb (the only comparison that stuck)
We tried both modes. The winner wasn’t a logo. It was:
1. Sleep — can you actually recover between days?
2. AC — does it work now, not “after it cycles”?
3. Grab distance — door to pin, not brochure “near the circuit.”
Everything else (pool photos, lobby marble) was noise.
Pick your base
| If you want… | Base | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Nights, food, city pulse | Downtown KL | Longer haul to Sepang |
| Cool air + a reset day | Genting | Not a daily race commute |
| Race-week logistics | Cyberjaya corridor | Quieter; less “holiday brochure” |
We were all over the place in a short amount of time — and that was the trip. For Sepang, pick the base that matches the day you’re having, not the Instagram fantasy of one perfect hotel.
